England cricket captain Jos Buttler knows his future as captain might depend on the next game against Afghanistan in Lahore. If England loses this important game, they will likely be out of the Champions Trophy.
This would be their third straight poor showing in a big tournament under Buttler, after they failed to defend their World Cup titles in 2023 and 2024.
“As England captain, you always want to do well and help your team win,” Buttler said, admitting the team’s recent difficulties. Even with the pressure, Buttler is trying to stay positive and is determined to lead the team to victory.
He said the only change to the England team is Jamie Overton playing instead of the injured Brydon Carse.
England hasn’t been playing well in one-day games. They’ve lost 11 of their last 15 one-day matches since the 2023 World Cup, including a loss to Australia.
While a rained-out game between Australia and South Africa gives England a small chance, they must beat both Afghanistan and South Africa to make sure they reach the semi-finals.
Buttler said they need to build on what they did well against Australia and get better in other areas.
The dew, which may have helped Australia in their last game at the same place, is something to think about, especially with Afghanistan’s strong spin bowlers, like Rashid Khan.
Buttler is staying focused and says the team is ready and determined to play their best.
